Best known as the main subject in Netflix’s 2023 documentary Take Care of Maya. The documentary explores her struggle and her family’s negative experience with Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. It details their long fight for justice beginning in 2016. 

Before Fame

She was ten years old when she was hospitalized at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in 2016. She was diagnosed with an illness called complex regional pain syndrome (known as CRPS). Her parents were separated from her and she was put into state custody. 

Trivia

She began taking part in Duke University‘s Talent Identification Program for gifted children. Her illness had made her paralyzed for years but eventually regained the use of her legs. 

Family Life

She was born in Florida to father Jack Kowalski and mother Beata Kowalski. Her father was a firefighter and her mother was a nurse. She has a brother named Kyle.

After the release of the documentary, other families have come forth about being wrongly accused at the same hospital. This includes American Idol finalist Syesha Mercado.
